hi friends.
welcome to another mailing list update on what is the goings on.
Pop Montreal is coming up, and we have an amazing slot in the festival. we will be playing at the new Jazz Festival venue, l'Astral. it's a BEAUTIFUL new room that hosts all kinds of music.... and lots of jazz. but don't expect any David Martel Trio ensemble or anything of the sort. it's going to be me and The Friend Ship doing what we love best... taking showers.

July is supposed to be hot and fun... and wet and it lied to us.
but it doesn't have to be, so i'll try and be hopeful it will stop the lies.

in case you didn't know, The Friend Ship... my band... is the greatest and bestest band one could ask for.
we've had some great shows this summer, and the next one seems like it might be at the top!

we saw her perform at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas this past April.... and our jaws dropped right through the floor of the club.
we had to be escorted out for damaging property.
but they let us stay for the show, which was nice of them.

hello friends.
it's been a while since the last update...
SO MUCH has been going on, it's been hard to keep up... ZAAANG!!!
last week, i got back from the U.S. tour.
SXSW in Austin, TX was CRAZY!

opening for AC Newman in Cleveland was an amazing opportunity.
we're now best of friends.
i'm hoping to go on a fishing trip with him this summer... but i don't know where he lives.... or if he even likes fishing, so i guess that could prove problematic.

how's the weather?
i've seen worse in february, that's for sure.
yeah, speaking of nice february weather... how awesome was it during the last two weekends for Mike and I.
woah... touring in february in these parts is always a risky.
but we had no precipitation whatsoever for both weekends!
in case you're not up to date...
i just got off a 7 show tour with my good buddy Mike O'Brien (http://www.myspace.com/mikeobrientunes)
we kicked it off in Montreal.
it was me and The Friend Ship at the amazing Divan Orange.
after that, Mike and I took the musickings to Ontario, just the two of us.
we hit Toronto, Windsor, Waterloo, St Catharine's, and Kemptville.
all i can say is, wow!
GOOD TIMES WERE HAD BY ALL!
for those who were there with us.... yes, i absolutely do hope mike and i will do it again... AND SOON!
so, what else is going on?
well...

before anything...
i'm really excited to announce that the video for The End of Self is ready and DONE!
The Friend Ship and i had a blast putting this together.
we worked with my new friend, director Michael Lalancette, and his crew.
we're all really proud of it!
the whole experience was intense... last minute... and so much fun, from start to finish!

so what else?
uh.... what a crazy New York week this was!
i was back and forth to the Big Apple TWICE.
i was at Blender Theatre this past tuesday opening for PT Walkley. http://ptwalkley.com/
drove back to montreal wednesday morning.... got caught in that rancid snowstorm that hit pretty much everywhere between NYC and Montreal.
then i drove back on saturday evening so i could lead worship the next morning with my wonderful friends at Glad Tidings Tabernacle. http://www.gladtidingsnyc.com/
that night i performed at Rockwood Music Hall. http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com
(what a great venue!)
drove back to montreal the monday afternoon with cello player, Marianne Houle.
hope the old car can handle all the mileage i've been putting on it!

what's going on in your hearts today?
mine is pretty rejoiced right now!
got home last night from France.
WHAT A DOPE TIME THAT WAS!!
Natasha joined me for the trip... it was so good to have her along for the ride!
we were staying at a friend's place in Nice, so we spent most of the days there shopping, eating, and walking.... sometimes talking.
on monday and tuesday night, we performed at Morrison's Pub, in Cannes.
Cannes is really nice, too.
lots of white buildings.
there were a lot of industry people from all over the world in Cannes because of the MIDEM conference going on.
we made lots of new friends, and hopefully these relationships can lead to a lot more touring and performances on that side of the ocean!

i still can`t believe it.
tomorrow afternoon, natasha and i will be putting on our boots... stepping into a car.... driving over to the airport... stepping on a plane... and then when we step off... WE`LL BE IN AMSTERDAM!!!
but it doesn`t end there... we just transfer in Amsterdam
then we get on another flight... and when we step off.... WE`RE IN FRANCE!!!! AND WE WON`T BE NEEDING ANY BOOTS!
we land in Nice, and we`ll be staying with a friend for our short stay.
but MIDEM is what it`s all about.
takes place in CANNES.... right on the coast.

this has been a good time and times and a half for me and the crew.....
let's see... why?
well, we did the CBC RADIO 2 "Routes" performance this past Monday.
MANY MANY THANKS ARE DUE TO FRANK AND ANNA AND THE CBC CREW WHO WERE SO FRIENDLY AND WELCOMING AND ACCOMMODATING THE WHOLE DAY THROUGH!
thanks also to all who came to the performance.
as i said in the invite, it's more fun to play in front of people as opposed to no people. and alas, we got to play for people!
the whole gang was there... speaking of The Friend Ship, of course.
it was dope.... we got to do about an hour of music.
SUCCESS!
the performance will be airing on CBC Radio 2 some time in the new year. (probably january or february '09).
i'll definitely keep you posted as to exactly WHEN that will be... once the people from the CBC let us know.

forgot to mention in the last newsletter....
on November 4th, i was at Musique Plus on the show MP6.
i got to do a short interview, and natasha and i performed 'Stay In'

well, it's a great opportunity for me and The Friend Ship.
when we're not doing shows in front of you, we're working hard on meeting people and playing all the time and ironing our shirts.
in this case, M for Montreal opens up the door for us to play in front of a whole panel of delegates from across the globe.
if things go well, this could mean new friends from across the globe... Europe, Australia, USA, South America... you name it!
so... behind the scenes, i'm doing my thing... and hopefully all this work pays off so that if you're reading this from another part of the globe... i might be in your neck of woods sooner than later.

YAY FOR ALIVE!
last night, it was just me and the girls.
Kristina (cello), Karine (accordion), and me (good looks) went to play in Wakefield, QC at the legendary Black Sheep Inn.
good times were had by all.
BIG THANKS TO PAUL AND MONTANA FOR THE SWEET HOSPITALITY!
yes... in the words of the late Wesley Willis, "The music was pumping. The show was a success!"
but it was on the drive home where i got to (finally) experience what it is to have your life flash before your eyes....
that's right friendly.... we almost hit a dear!!
no joke, it was a crazy-close call!
it happened just outisde Rigaud, about 20 minutes outside Montreal.
pretty big one... could have been a buck, actually... i didn't really have time to notice if there were antlers....
and it was just standing there in the middle of the highway not really paying any notice to the giant hunk of metal rapidly approaching.
i don't know how i did it, but i managed to swerve to the left juuuuuuuuuust enough to avoid the dear and at the same time not pulling the wheel too drastically and flipping the car right over............. PHEW!!!!
crazy close call.

after just re-living the whole experience again, i think i'm going to go to the bathroom.

well, welcome back and hello.
there is more news to speak of, so i'm writing.
of course, music is continuously in the making... as long as i can help it.
last thursday was the big show at Sala Rossa.
it was me on stage with 7 members of the Friend Ship.
jimmy on electric guitar, natasha of course being vocal, lorraine on vocals, karine on keys and accordion, jean-mic on bass, yanik on drumes, and koropecki on cello.
Courtney Wing kicked the evening off with delight and choir beautifulness.

AND THEN
with just a couple of hours sleep... the very next morning... me and natasha, and my manager RJ took to the road bright and early.
we headed out to North Bay to partake in a songwriters circle for a COCA showcase.
it worked out quite well.
the microphones were on which helped.
there were 5 performers in total.... including the winner of Rockstar Supernova, Lukas Rossi.
??
yeah.
natasha and i remembered our vocalities, which was nice.
it was an afternoon to remember.
the drive to North Bay on Hwy 17 is a lot nicer than the ride from montreal to toronto on the 401.... lots of trees and lakes and hills and shielding.
